I’m definitely a person who is organized and scheduled. I feel so much better about my day if it’s organized and if I have a to-do list. I totally get everyone is different, and I’m so glad that not everyone in the world is like me! I married a fiery, free-spirited husband that keeps me on my toes and doesn’t let me get too bogged down in over-organizing our world. But I also realize that I do have a strength. Bringing order to our family life is something I’m really good at. Here’s some things I do everyday no matter what…
1 | Make my bed. Sounds silly but it’s important to me. I notice that I start my day off organized and feeling ‘together’ if my bed is made. I’m more likely to put things up where they belong, and I’m more productive. I think it’s the mindset that it helps put me in. My room is clean, and I’m ready to move forward with my day.
2 | Eat breakfast. To be honest, I couldn’t not eat breakfast. I have a high metabolism and low blood sugar so I literally can’t function without breakfast. But I also know that breakfast sets my eating up for the rest of the day. I make sure it is healthy and often includes juicing. Breakfast, like making my bed, sets me off on the right foot for the day.
3 | Spend time outside. Rain or shine, I am outside every day. Sometimes it might only be for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening to feed animals, but I make sure I get outside time. If the weather is nice, I try to be out 4+ hours a day. This includes my kids as well. If the weather is nice, I basically don’t let them stay inside. If the weather is bad, we still get out even if it’s just to wear off a bit of energy and breath in some fresh air.
4 | Read. I love to read. My mom used to have to tell me to put my book down and come to the dinner table. I don’t read nearly as much as I used to, but I do read every day. Whether it’s a book on something I’ve been researching or just a pleasure book that’s most likely historical fiction, I do spend a bit of time reading every day. Most likely it’s 10-15 minutes before I head to bed, but occasionally, I get addicted to a book, and I get lost for hours and end up staying up too late!
5 | Pick up the house. I love a clean house! I do clean once a week, but I don’t go crazy on the days in-between. I’ve realized if everything is picked up at the end of the day, I am a much happier mom. Most of the time I do a good job at having my children pick up after themselves at the end of the day. Occasionally, I forget to have them do it, or they are too tired so I do it for them. But I always end my day with a house that is picked up with everything put away where it belongs.
6 | Wipe down the kitchen counters. Again, I love clean! Wiping down the counters is something I do after every meal. It’s simple, super quick, and makes the kitchen feel so much more neat and clean!
7 | Load dirty dishes. I’m not perfect at this, but I don’t usually ever leave dishes in the sink. Occasionally, lunch dishes will be rinsed and put on one side of the sink but not loaded until after dinner. But usually, I am really pro-active at loading all the dishes when we use them. Not only does it save time (dishes that are left in the sink just let the food get petrified to them and are harder to clean), but it makes it so everyone in the house is better about cleaning up after themselves. Children, husband, and roommates are much more likely to load their dishes in the dishwasher if there are no dishes in the sink to begin with.
8 | Read to my children. My husband and I read to them every day. They both get books before bed, but oftentimes, I’ll take a few minutes to read to them during the day as well. It helps that our daughter constantly wants to be read to so she’s always asking me, but I also love it. A love of books is something I want to foster in them so the more I read, the more I know they will learn and fall in love with books.
9 | Interact with animals. After my family, animals are my second love. I couldn’t image doing life without them. They keep me grounded and level headed. If I’m having a rough day with the kids, I’ll go outside on the porch and just pet the dog for a minute. It’s amazing how my perspective returns, and I can walk back inside a better mom.
10 | Get alone time. I’m an introvert that doesn’t have a high need for lots of people interaction. Having children around me 24/7 has definitely changed the amount of alone time I get every day, but I do make sure I get some. I’m a better mom and wife if I get alone time so I make sure that each day I have an hour or two to myself. This usually comes in the form of putting the kids in quiet time each morning.
